O'siyo

My name is Karen "Windrift" Torrez. I was born in Missouri and settled in Oklahoma as a teenager. I worked as a Registered Nurse for 22 years and retired about 10 years ago. I have studied geneology for the past 25years, which is where I discovered my family's Tsalagi roots. I am proud to be a member of The United Cherokee Nation (UCN) and strive to learn more about my heritage on a daily basis.

My Tsalagi roots were first recorded seven generations ago with a grandmother named Wut-teh of the Paint Clain, who married Nathaniel Gist/Guess, an officer in the Continental Army. Their son, Sequoyah (George Gist/Guess), created the Cherokee syllabary which made reading and writing in Cherokee possible. My family line also includes E-ya-gu Guess, George Starr, Elizabeth Starr, Mary Golden, and Zachariah Morris.

My hobbies include geneology, working in my flower garden, and spending time with my grandchildren.  I have been married for 32 years and have 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren.

I am honored to serve as The UCN Assistant Clan Chief of Oklahoma.

Wado,
